The
populations of the world have been decimated in a global plague. Apocalyptic
weather has washed civilization into the ocean. A little girl has
survived... and she is growing feathers. In her seaside Norwegian
cottage, The Snow Hen fishes for remnants of civilizationthat float
in with the tide, each new day unearthing memories of her vanished
family. Her lonely existance is broken by a haunted wanderer who crashes
into her world. They fall for each other and then fall apart.
The Snow Hen is a new play created by the New York City theater company
The Debate Society. The narrative is based on the Norwegian folk tale
Jostedal Grouse (Jostedalsrypa), which emerged from
the the 14th century, in the time of the Black Death. The production
draws inspiration from Norwegian culture, the paintings of Odd Nerdrum,
8mm home movies from the 1950's and 60's, and investigations into
memory and perception. It is a vividly theatrical event; a modern
allegory colliding the hopelessness of isolation with the urge to
connect and create.
The Snow Hen is made possible in part by grants from Chashama and
the Sons of Norway.
